Freedom of Information Act
We can help ensure the government is transparent by advising on FOIA matters, handling your records requests, and representing you before the Freedom of Information Commission.
Government Transparency Is a Right, Not a Privilege
Citizens have the right to know what their government is doing. Federal, state, and local government agencies are required by law to make their records publicly available — but agencies often delay responses, deny records without valid justification, or provide incomplete responses.
Rights & Remedies helps individuals, journalists, advocates, and organizations obtain government records through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). We also represent clients in proceedings before the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission (FOIC).
How We Can Help
Drafting and submitting records requests
Advising on which agency to target and how to craft effective requests
Responding to agency denials and filing administrative appeals
Representing clients at hearings before the FOIC
Advising on the scope of exemptions agencies are permitted to invoke
Pursuing litigation to compel disclosure when agencies fail to comply
Connecticut's Freedom of Information Act
Connecticut has one of the country's more robust freedom of information frameworks. The Connecticut FOIA gives the public the right to inspect and copy public records and to attend public meetings. When agencies deny requests or improperly close meetings, the FOIC has authority to order disclosure and, in some cases, impose sanctions.
If you have submitted a FOIA request and been stonewalled, denied, or given an inadequate response, we can help you challenge that denial and obtain the records you are entitled to.
